“Rituals of Memory” Summary
Kimberly M. Blaeser’s article “Rituals of Memory” shows her viewpoints on her cultral backgrounds. She starts by saying that culture loops back onto itself, like curly hair. Blaeser argues that our memories and the stories we tell define who we are. Blaeser also tells how people are made up of so many different cultures. She tells a story in which she follows Legionnaires on their way to respect the fallen at a cemetery on Memorial Day. Then, they go and show repect to the fallen Indians. Blaeser tells how these memories keep cultural balance in her life. She also explains that she lived a double life, American and Native American. In the end, her main point is that her roots to different cultures make her the person that she is today.
Summary Reflection
Please answer all questions in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
1. Explain the process you went through to write this summary. Please be specific.
At first, we had to read the article. We discussed the meaning of the main points as a class. We then used the main points and summarized them. Above is what I summarized.
2. What qualifies this paper as a summary? What are the requirements for this genre and how did you meet them?
This paper is a summary paper because it restates and tells the meaning of the article, in fewer words that are my own. A summary contains the main ideas of a writing. We went over some of the main ideas as a class and I then wrote about them accordingly.
3. What piece of advice would you give someone writing a summary for the first time? Why?
I would tell the person to write what the piece of writing was about and its main ideas. I would also tell them to condense it in their own words.
